The Punjab Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has launched a new health program. This program offers free heart surgeries for children. It aims to help families who cannot afford expensive treatments. The program started on September 16, 2024, at the Children’s Hospital in Lahore.
What is Maryam Nawaz Masihai Programme
The Maryam Masihai Programme is designed to help children with heart problems. Families will receive a Child Surgery Card. This card allows them to get free treatment at hospitals in Punjab. Both government and private hospitals will take part in this program.
The chief minister said this step will improve healthcare services. If government hospitals are full, children can go to private hospitals for surgery. This ensures that no child will miss out on treatment.
Phased Implementation
The heart surgery program will roll out in two phases:
- Phase One: Surgeries will first be available at six hospitals. These include:
- Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC)
- Children’s Hospital Lahore
- Children’s Hospital Multan
- Rawalpindi Cardiology Institute
- Phase Two: Later, more hospitals in Wazirabad, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, and Sargodha will join the program. This will help children in remote areas.
Addressing a National Healthcare Gap
At the launch, Maryam Nawaz said 5,000 children in Pakistan die each year due to lack of surgery. This program is the first of its kind. It will also offer free treatment to children from other provinces like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and Balochistan. The goal is to save lives and reduce the pain for families.
Monitoring and Growth
To track the program, a special dashboard has been created. During her visit, Maryam Nawaz checked the dashboard and met young patients. She also spoke with their parents about the care they received.
She promised to increase the number of heart surgeons in government hospitals. This will allow more children to get life-saving surgeries.
